jQuery Mobile Overview
jQuery Mobile (jQM) is a toolset developed on jQuery and jQuery-UI as a lightweight code base for mobile development. Built with progressive enhancement, flexibility and easily themed, jQM offers a platform to develop and deploy fast solutions using web technologies to modern mobile devices.
This course is delivered as a step by step hands on experience in developing an application from start to finish. Taking time to stop and discuss key aspects of the workflow, industry expectations and end user experience.
During the course you will cover everything required to build a web application and gain knowledge in mobile development using web technologies, including using third party libraries, understanding and using help docs and creating custom and dynamic content.
The course will end with some introduction content to further your understanding of mobile web technologies like HTML Canvas, video implementation and responsive web design.
Course Outcomes
By the end of the course students will understand how to implement jQuery Mobile to create web based applications for mobile devices, including:
- discussing best industry practices and core concepts
- focus on building efficient industry standard mobile web applications
- be introduced to key elements of mobile application development
- successfully build a working web application for mobile device deployment
- become a mobile web application ninja with practice and dedication
Course Requirements
The jQuery Mobile course covers everything that is needed to implement jQuery Mobile to develop and deploy mobile web applications.
As a basic requirement, students should already have good experience hand-coding HTML and understand CSS selectors. Some knowledge of JavaScript would be a distinct advantage as this is a programming course.
To get the best out of this course, you may want to first consider attending the Web Design with HTML & CSS course and the Integrating jQuery course.
Course Description
This jQuery Mobile course is designed towards learning a workflow to develop and deploy web based mobile applications.
Day one will start with an introduction to jQuery Mobile and what it can offer as a framework to provide professional solutions for mobile web application development. This will include discussion on support for various mobile devices and capabilities as an alternative to native application development.
To provide a foundation, we will spend a little time setting up a development environment, preparing a skeleton application and integrating basic navigational controls to produce a bare bones mobile application which can be used as a starting point for the majority of any future jQuery Mobile projects.
After a good foundation has been implemented, the course will move onto using traditional application components that form the basis of the majority of all applications. This will include mobile Lists, Grids and Dialogs. During this process we will work towards producing a common final application solution, so time will be spent implementing these features throughout the session.
To complete day one, the training focuses on the aesthetics of our application and jQuery Mobile Themes. We look at using the default themes available, but also delve into designing custom themes and implementing them into our own application.
Day two builds upon the aesthetics of our application by taking time to look through and modify jQuery CSS stylesheets. We will take time to look at the structure of jQuery Mobile CSS and learn how to hook into the framework to modify application behaviour and style using simple debugging techniques and the jQuery library.
With all mobile applications, icons often take centre stage within a design and although jQuery provides a wide range of default icons, some projects will no doubt need to use your own custom icons. This course will look at how we can easily implement custom icons using the jQuery Mobile framework.
Most mobile applications rely on external application data, so the course will spend time looking at common techniques using JSON as a lightweight structured data format. JSON can be used to provide dynamic data to any web application. We will also look at Moustache as a code template engine to work seamlessly with JSON data.
The course will then move onto additional common features within native mobile applications and how these can provide web based alternatives. This will include HTML video and interactive content, as well as looking at multi-device support using Responsive Web Design (RWD) techniques.
Finally, we finish with debugging and testing the application we have built and add some final touches to provide a more mobile native feel. Time throughout the course will be spent clarifying key aspects and ensure that you leave with a thorough understanding of mobile web application solutions using jQuery Mobile.
