It was time again for the Pantone Colour Institute to announce their pick for Colour of the Year. We did an article last year on the really popular Ultra Violet (18-3838) colour choice which was described as inventive and imaginative.
This time around, the 2019 Colour of the Year is Living Coral (Pantone 16-1546 TCX or Pantone 2345 C – yes, an easy one to remember). Living Coral is described as vibrant, yet mellow by Pantone and is inspired by a need to relax and promote human interaction, in world of constantly shifting digital landscapes.
A Colour to enable connection and intimacy
Pantone feel that this year needs more authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy while also encouraging lighthearted activity. Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral is about optimism and the innate need for joyful pursuits.
The contrast from last year’s Ultra Violet purple seems to reflect society’s need to be more optimistic about the future and see everything in a positive light while maintaining a connection to our natural roots.
In terms of design, this year’s choice of Living Coral is a colour that lends itself to branding, product design and social media platforms. Living Coral is both gender and age neutral, so works well in a wide range of product designs and promotions.
